The Rotaract Club of Manipal has the distinction of being the 100 th Rotaract Club to be chartered the world over. Chartered in the year 1992, the Club operates from the campus of the Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal and has a membership that is wholly MITian; though students from nearby colleges are also allowed to join. 172 members ensure a club that is never short of enthusiastic volunteers and as the members come from all four years and branches, the Rotaract is the best place to meet new faces, like say the cute girl/guy you’ve being waiting to meet in college! Social Service is the motivation of the club and we ensure that it involves the element of fun as well. Blood Donation camps, Clothes Collection Drives, Sports tournaments, Excursions, Rallies, Parties, Guest lectures, Public cleanliness drives, Inter-Club meets, District Conferences, Movie shows for orphans, Special Home visits, Cultural events, Event Organization… the list goes on and on, even extending to logistics handling! Among our projects, the Blood Donation camps we organise are one of the most socially relevant things we do. With the major shortage of fresh blood most trauma centers face, it is heartening to see the number of people from Manipal who turn up for one of our camps, all Rotaractors included. The Blood Bank attached to the Kasturba Medical College reports that their highest donors are in fact MITian. The clothes collection drives organised by the club sees groups of volunteers going from house to house or from block to block as the case may be, collecting old clothes to be sent to those in need. Old magazines and spare medicine are also collected to be sent to patients at KMC. The Rotaract Club of Manipal has a special relationship with the Bal Nikethan Orphanage at Udupi. We organise a special movie show for the children during the Rotaract Week, the tickets sponsored generously by MIT students. During Diwali, a group of us visited the orphans. From the expressions on our faces when we left, I'm sure we Rotractors imbibed more joy than we set out to give. The level of enthusiasm among our members is at an all time high. When we called for volunteers to pay a visit to the Special Home for children at Vikasana, there were more Rotractors present than the children we had come to visit! The Rotaract has in the past set up cricket tournaments between the staff of the MIT Messes. This year the club organised an inter-collegiate basketball tournament. To add a twist to things, we insisted that at least two players on each team had to be girls.(so, the Rotaract stands for Women's Lib too!) So legendary have our organisational abilities become that other colleges ask for volunteers from within our ranks for help. Rotaract volunteers helped out at 'MARHABA', the recently held MAHE fest. Every year, we set up a stall at 'BRANDSCAN'; the consumer fest organised at TAPMI and in a historic first, turned out a handsome profit this year! Visiting Rotractors always leave with good memories of Manipal and seldom fail to stay in touch. As far as possible, a team from RC Manipal shows up at all the Rotaract District events and generally sweep the cultural events. Board members have even been to visit the District Rotaract Representative personally at his home to ensure good communication and representation for the club at the District level. We also stay in constant communication with our parent club, the Rotary Club of Udupi-Manipal and in friendly competition with the Leo Club of Manipal ! Rotaract picnics go a step further each time! Malpe beach, Kudlu Falls, Kotachadri and most recently Goa ! Well attended, these picnics ensure a good time for all (if you can survive the incessant singing along the way!). If Manipal had a rigid social circuit, the annual Rotaract Bash would definitely figure as an A-list party (even though the tendency to play inane party games does exist!) All the Rotaract happenings are duly recorded in the Club's monthly publication- 'The Centurion'. All in all, the Rotaract Club of Manipal provides an excellent platform for student interaction and an opportunity to develop organisational and leadership skills. No member leaves without developing a social conscience, which broadly speaking, is the reason for the Rotary Movement. Add to this a very good measure of fun, and you have RC Manipal in all its glory! President: Rahul N. Bhat Secretary: Sathish Bhat Treasurer: Amitha Shenoy Joint Sec.: P. Karthi.
