The department, established in the year 1960, offers an undergraduate course in Electrical and Electronics and a postgraduate course in Illumination Technology of Mangalore University. The department has fully equipped laboratories such as Electrical Machinery Laboratory, Electrical and Electronics Measurements Lab, Power Electronics Lab, Project Lab and Departmental Computer Center.
Some of the sophisticated equipments include Logic Analyzer, Digital storage oscilloscopes, four channel oscilloscopes, oscilloscopes with waveform processors and printer interfaces, Converter/inverter/chopper modules with firing circuits, 8 and 16 bit microprocessor development systems, precision calibrating systems, earth resistance measurement kit etc. The departmental computer center is equipped with all popular compilers, PCB design software packages and simulation tools like PSPICE and MATLAB.
The major consultancy areas available are in interior / exterior lighting systems design, maintenance and testing of electrical equipment. The Department holds regular departmental workshops and seminars on advanced technical subjects for its students and staff. A separate institution of Engineers (India) E & E Students Chapter is formed to encourage the student activities. The Department publishes a Biannual Technical magazine "SPARK', and also encourages healthy competition among the students in their academic performance by instituting various awards to outstanding students in the final year of U.G. & P.G. Courses.
